NATIONAL HISTORY MUSEUM OF UKRAINE

Founded in 1899 as a division of the city Museum of Antiqueities and Arts. The present building of the museum is located in the territory of Kyiv's Dytynts. The museums collection numbers exceed 600,000 exhibits. This is Kiev's richest archeological, ethnographic and numismatic collection of fine and applied Arts. THe museum's exposition tells about the history of Ukraine since the olden times until the present day. One of Kiev's best museums to visit.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ARTS OF UKRAINE

Another fine Kiev museum, situated in the premises of it predecessor, the first public museum in Kyiv - of Antiques and Arts. This Kiev museum holds over 20,000 pieces of arts, including icons of the 12th - 18th centuries and pictures by Ukrainian artists of the 19th - 20th century.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF LITERATURE OF UKRAINE

Anyone interested in Ukrainian or Russian literature is highly recommended to visit this rich Kiev Museum. Established in 1981 in the premises of former Galgan's Collegium it displays documents telling about the development of the national literature since Kyivan Rus' times and special topical collections including such Ukrainian and Russian authors such as Taras Shevchenko and Alexander Pushkin.

NATIONAL KIEV-PECHERSK (LAVRA) HISTORIC AND CULTURAL PRESERVE

Babi Yar is the name of a ravine situated just outside the Kiev boundaries. It is estimated over 100,000 people, mostly Jewish were killed at the site. Today, it is a memorial site which contains among other monuments a large (Menorah) monument which today serves as the place for commemorative ceremonies mostly for the Kiev Jewish community.


NATIONAL MUSEUM OF TARAS SHEVCHENKO

Established in 1949 in the former mansion of M. Tereschnko this museum houses the works of what most would consider Ukraine's greatest poet / writer. The museum displays autographs and personals of Taras shevchenko, his paintings an drawings, books, photographs and other numerous documents. There are 24 halls of expositions containing over 4,000 items.

MUSEUM OF HISTORICAL TREASURES OF UKRAINE

This highly recommend Kiev museum was established as a branch of the Historic Museum in 1963 to keep and display objects from precious metals and stones. Over 130,000 exhibits tell about almost 3,000 years of jewelry's history. It masterpieces of universal significance include works by the Scythian and antique goldsmiths, East Slav and Old Ru' masters and various Ukrainian jewelers (16th - 20th centuries).

MUSEUM OF FOLK ARCHITECHTURE AND FOLKWAYS OF UKRAINE

This absolutely wonderful and unique open air Kiev museum is located just a short driver from the center (about 30 minutes) in the Village of Pyronovo. Contains one of the few preserves of 17th and 18th century Ukrainian village life and represents the landscape, architecture and way of life of different regions of Ukraine. This is one of the biggest open air museums in the world. It is situated in a picturesque place, on the area of 150 ha, displaying the landscapes, architecture and rural life of Ukraine. Its exhibits are huts, churches, mills, agricultural structures and utensils plus domestic appliances from various centuries. THe Museum's funds include over 70,000 relics. Some of the churches are used for service. This is a highly recommended option for anyone looking for something different from a typical city center Kiev museum and a perfect place to spend a day at with your family.

CHERNOBYL NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS OF UKRAINE

One of the most tragic experiences of Ukraine under while part of Soviet Union was the sight of the world's worst nuclear accident Exhibits in this Kiev museum for curious minds including signs from the ghost towns immediately outside of Chernobyl, photos of animal and human deformities as a result of the accident and a small model of the reactor which caused Chernobyl accident.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR HISTORY 1941-1945

This large memorial complex should be visited by any war buff or just a family looking to spend a day outdoors while learning about WWII history and equipment. Just a short drive from the very center of Kiev, the complex is highlighted by the well visible statue, which can be seen from many Kiev angles, under the name of "Rodina Mat" - Motherland. The Kiev memorial complex occupies over 10 hectares located on a hill with sights of Dnieper River.

The memorial complex is also home to a large arsenal of Soviet times war equipment. It contains war hardware from wars ranging from WWI to the Soviet Afghan war. Once can examine many tanks, helicopters, submarines and even step inside some of the planes and take the seat of a Soviet pilot. The part which houses the complex is also home to numerous flower shows and occasional summer concerts mostly of Ukrainian folk music.
